Local is Lekker

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

Everybody wants to be a "skkkrr" and everybody wants to be woke. Which is great, but I mean are you really woke if you can barely support the talent around you? The amount of talent and creativity is so massive however, consumer psychology has proven that no matter how good the product is, consumers still prefer to buy international. Why? Mainstream media that feeds us with western culture and adopts African trends without giving credit where credit is due.

Who can rectify that? You! The consumer needs to start realizing that Zara is not the only way. Not only does it promote entrepreneurship in your own country but things like thrifting, which is also local, promotes sustainability. Now that you're woke, here's where you can buy stuff.

MYTH: Cool local drip is expensive?? I'm gonna prove you wrong

This is a thrift store found in 34 Chiswick St Brixton JHB. They source their clothing from all around Africa and have your favorite name brands from Nike to Lakers. I could honestly go on on.

Nike jersey on the left goes for R950, Original Ralph Lauren sweater on the right goes for R500. Only one of the dope pieces you can get from this store.

Ladies, if you want to explore your sophisticated vintage side then this is the place to do it. Founded and owned by Xoliswa Kawuzela, this is a great place to find fun working class clothing for ridiculous prices

On the left is a blazer from Zara going for R1899 and on the right is Zawo blazer that goes for only R300

And if you are one of those people that are paranoid about wearing vintage, I still got you

Zando

Zando, which is a perfect online option for those of you who do not like the outdoors (me). Let's compare prices for a second

On your left is the Zando striped "f-boy" shirt going for only R305 whereas on your left though similar, the shirt from forever 21 is going for R415

For all the misfits, the outcasts and everybody else in between. There's "dripp" out there for you too. Founder Bryce Shabangu, has merch in every shade for every season at super reasonable prices. If your style is a perfect mix of comfy and cool, well this is the drip for you.

Misfit T-shirt on the left goes for R150 rand, the plain cotton on T-shirt is R250

"A Global Fashion Brand. Beautiful Creations made for unique individuals mixed with Michael's Collection of Hope & Love." Well put by the brand owner Himself. This tailoring and casual clothing brand caters for men and women. The suits range from R4000 up till R7000 depending on your style and design.
