2020 TRENDS; RUFFLY SPEAKING

Hello sippers, 2019 trend forecasters brought us a few predictions that got us excited about 2020...then 2020 happened. We are going to be looking into the ruffle trend and whether it will make it through 2020 or simply "wither" away.

What are ruffles you ask? In sewing and dressmaking, a ruffle, frill, or furbelow is a strip of fabric, lace or ribbon tightly gathered or pleated on one edge and applied to a garment, bedding, or other textile as a form of trimming. In history, ruffles where known to be unisex. They came to be in 16th century Spain, soldiers used to where many layers of clothing then rip their sleeve after war to reveal the fabric underneath.

For a brief genesis, we go all the way back to 2017 where ruffles were still in the early trend stages and where only seen once or twice on the runway. They started getting more attention when Marc Jacobs released his fall collection in 2018. Fast forward to 2019, ruffles where on the runways, on red carpets, at the mall, on your curtains (I certainly hope not) and even on our social feeds!

Where are ruffles going now? Ruffles have been on the rise for a number of season and due to the many worldwide changes we have had in the 2020 season, It is fair to predict that the ruffle trend is going to decline. All events that require such extravagant styling have been cancelled and economies are crashing. There has also been a rise in the awareness of sustainable fashion hence the use of large amounts of fabric for one garment will be reduced.
