In "light" of women's month that just ended and the gruesome events that took place in it. Social media is in its peaks like never before but the question is; will it really bring change or is it just another hype story that will die down in a few days?

Recent assault victims viral on social media

I believe that if you have influence, use it well but do I believe that social media is enough to bring change? It doesn't matter what I believe, let's pull out statistics and first hand accounts. Some students say "rape and assault happen everyday what are these viral post gonna change?" The average response rate for cases like rape and kidnapping take months if not years to solve. Uyinene was found two weeks after going missing and

Amy-Lee de Jager was returned safely less than 24 hour after her abduction. Women are killed every four hours in South Africa. One in 13 women in Gauteng had reported non-partner rape, and only one in 25  rapes had been reported to the police.

I 100% believe that this is not just a woman's fight but a world fight. Over 9.6% of men have reported being sexually assaulted by another male. We all know that this statistic is nothing compared to the male victims that have not reported to the police. All because men are told to shut up and keep their pain until they break! This is the world we live and yes social media can help but it clearly only goes so far. Is this the start of our very own me too movement?

Statistics derived from 1200 schools in South Africa

Unfortunately I couldn't publish some of the horrific stories I have been told today. However if you have views or experiences you would like to share comment below or leave a message privately @sthembie_n . For professional help please call 021 447 9762
