Controversy caused by high end brands is nothing new to us. In fact it is becoming a trend.
Italian brand Gucci recently released a sweater on its online store that caused an up roar because it is said to resemble black face. It offended a large amount of people all around the world including celebrities like T.I, Soulja Boy and English talk show host Piers Morgan.
They sent out an apology claiming they were unaware. So let’s assume they really were clueless of what blackface was (during black history month), although this is all people have been talking about, why not hire diverse employees from different racial backgrounds?
Okay also let’s be honest for a second. How many times have these high end brands sent out apologies and statements promising to be more racially and culturally sensitive “next time”. Is it really going to stop? Or is this another money making strategy that brands are passing around among each other. The more we give them attention the more headlines they get to make. Let’ not forget the H&M monkey T-shirt, Prada blackface key ring, Adidas all white shoe for black empowerment. I could go on and on. Also like Spike Lee said “if you want to apologize build a school” do something that actually matters, put your money where your mouth is.
